TLDR HNG may help prevent the negative effects of chemotherapy on sperm production and white blood cell counts.
The study examined the effects of the mitochondrial peptide analogue HNG on mitigating the adverse effects of cyclophosphamide (CP) on sperm production and white blood cell counts in mice. Thirty adult male mice were assigned to one of four groups: control, HNG only, CP only, and HNG+CP. The findings indicated that HNG treatment significantly raised plasma HNG levels and sperm counts, whereas CP treatment significantly decreased plasma IGF-1 levels, sperm counts, and white blood cell counts. When HNG was used in conjunction with CP, it increased sperm counts and reduced CP-induced neutropenia. The study concluded that HNG could potentially prevent CP-induced reductions in sperm output and white blood cell counts, suggesting its usefulness as an adjunct therapy to reduce chemotherapy side effects like neutropenia and onco-infertility.
