TLDR Alopecia patients have lower antioxidants and higher lipid damage in their blood.
The study aimed to assess the levels of antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in the blood of 37 patients with alopecia compared to 34 healthy controls. It found that patients with alopecia had significantly lower levels of beta-carotene, reduced glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, while thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were significantly higher, indicating increased lipid peroxidation. However, vitamin E levels did not differ significantly between the two groups. These findings suggested a potential role of increased lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidants in alopecia.
