Studysummary This study found that pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract (GS-E3D) may promote hair growth by enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, proliferating hair dermal papilla cells, and inhibiting 5α-reductase activity. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
The study from 7 years ago investigated the hair growth promoting effects of pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract (GS-E3D). The researchers examined its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, its impact on human hair dermal papilla cells (HHDPC) proliferation, and testosterone-induced 5α-reductase inhibitory effects. GS-E3D showed antioxidant properties, such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and xanthine oxidase inhibitory effects, as well as anti-inflammatory properties, including lipoxygenase and hyaluronidase inhibitory effects. GS-E3D also promoted the proliferation of HHDPC more than minoxidil or finasteride, which were used as positive controls. Furthermore, GS-E3D exhibited 5α-reductase inhibitory activities after being stimulated by testosterone. The results suggested that GS-E3D has potential as a hair growth promoting agent for cosmetic materials.
