TLDR Modified red ginseng extract promotes hair growth and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
The study from 2017 explored the effects of pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract (GS-E3D) on hair growth and found that it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, including the ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit enzymes that can cause skin inflammation and dryness. GS-E3D was shown to promote the proliferation of human hair dermal papilla cells more effectively than minoxidil or finasteride and demonstrated inhibitory effects on 5α-reductase in the presence of testosterone, suggesting its potential as a natural agent for hair growth promotion and alopecia prevention. The study did not specify the number of participants, thus the strength of the findings cannot be determined based on sample size. The research was supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Agency.
