Antimalarial Therapy for Granuloma Annulare: Results of a Retrospective Analysis

Sungat K. Grewal, Courtney Rubin, Misha Rosenbach
TLDR Antimalarial drugs, especially chloroquine, can effectively treat granuloma annulare.
This retrospective analysis reviewed 35 histologically confirmed granuloma annulare (GA) cases from the University of Pennsylvania between 2009 and 2016. The study found that 55.6% of patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and 100% of those treated with chloroquine showed improvement, with an average treatment duration of 3.6 and 3 months, respectively. The cohort had a higher prevalence of comorbidities such as glucose intolerance (63.2%), dyslipidemia (80%), and thyroid disease (37%) compared to the general population. The study highlighted the potential association of GA with thyroid disease and suggested that antimalarials could be considered as first-line treatment for generalized GA. Limitations included the small sample size and retrospective nature of the study.
