TLDR The sponges effectively prevent dry socket by stopping bleeding and killing bacteria after tooth extraction.
The study developed antibacterial quaternary ammonium chitosan/carboxymethyl starch/alginate (ACQ) sponges with enhanced hemostatic properties to prevent dry socket after tooth extraction. These sponges, created through Ca2+ crosslinking and lyophilization, demonstrated superior antibacterial and hemostatic capabilities compared to traditional methods. In vitro and in vivo tests, including models with mice and pigs, confirmed their effectiveness in promoting hemostasis and reducing blood loss. The sponges showed high cell viability, effective inhibition of bacteria like E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans, and rapid blood clotting with low hemolysis rates, indicating their potential as a multifunctional dressing for dental applications.
