TLDR The triterpenoids from Ganoderma lucidum can block testosterone effects and may help treat enlarged prostate.
In 2007, a study examined the effects of triterpenoids from Ganoderma lucidum on androgen-related processes, finding that these compounds inhibited both isozymes of 5α-reductase and suppressed testosterone-induced prostate growth in castrated rats. The study concluded that the triterpenoids, specifically from fraction B (Fr. B), were responsible for these effects, suggesting a potential for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The experiments involved groups of 6 rats for prostate weight measurements and groups of 3 for 5α-reductase activity assays, indicating a relatively small sample size. Further research was recommended to explore clinical applications.
