TLDR Anethole reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in colitis.
The study on 48 male NMRI mice found that anethole effectively reduced symptoms of acetic acid-induced colitis by mitigating histopathological changes and enhancing antioxidant activity. Anethole increased total antioxidant capacity and decreased malondialdehyde levels, while also reducing the expression of inflammatory genes such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and TLR4. These results suggested that anethole had potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could be beneficial in managing colitis, though further research was needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.
