🚨 The text mentions patchy hair loss and a gastric trichobezoar, which are relevant to human hair and alopecia, but the primary focus is on Rapunzel syndrome and its psychosocial aspects rather than detailed hair biology or treatment side effects.
TLDR A multidisciplinary approach is crucial for treating complex cases of Rapunzel syndrome in children.
A 12-year-old girl with a history of sickle-thalassemia presented with symptoms of Rapunzel syndrome, including epigastric pain, generalized swelling (anasarca), severe anemia, and patchy hair loss. The case was complicated by her psychosocial background, including parental separation and harsh paternal behavior. Examination revealed a gastric trichobezoar, confirmed by CT scan, and she required multiple transfusions for anemia and hypoproteinemia. After surgical removal of the trichobezoar and psychiatric support, the patient showed significant improvement in her nutritional status and overall well-being. This case underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex presentations of Rapunzel syndrome in pediatric patients.

Oral minoxidil is effective for hair loss but can cause cardiovascular side effects, such as pericardial effusion, especially in those with genetic predispositions. Starting with low doses and monitoring cardiovascular health are advised to reduce risks.
