TLDR Amlodipine impairs fertility in male rats by affecting sperm and testicular structure.
The study investigated the anti-fertility effects of Amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, on adult male Wistar rats. Thirty-three rats were divided into seven groups, with control groups receiving saline and experimental groups receiving varying doses of Amlodipine (5-40 mg/kg BW) for 56-65 days. The results showed that Amlodipine caused reduced body weight, hair loss, and loss of locomotion and balance in a dose-dependent manner. Although testosterone levels remained unaffected, there were significant dose-dependent anomalies in sperm morphology, including sperms with no head and double tail, along with reduced sperm count and motility. Histological analysis revealed changes such as scanty seminiferous tubules and reduced interstitial cells. The study concluded that Amlodipine impaired fertility in male rats at doses of 5 mg/kg BW or higher.
November 2023 in “Brain Sciences” Some medications might contribute to male infertility, with finasteride showing a high number of reports.
March 2026 in “Archives of Dermatological Research” The study explores the impact of amlodipine topical cream on hair growth in an alopecia mouse model, revealing that it promotes hair growth through VEGF-mediated angiogenesis and vasodilation. This suggests that amlodipine could serve as a potential treatment for hair loss by improving blood flow and nutrient delivery to hair follicles. The research underscores the importance of VEGF in hair growth and proposes that targeting angiogenesis pathways may be advantageous in treating alopecia.
