Computer Vision AI-Based Androgenetic Alopecia Analysis Using a Novel Mobile Web App

TLDR The MDhair app accurately assesses hair loss severity with 94% accuracy.
The study tested MDhair.co, an AI-based mobile app, on 30 women with androgenetic alopecia to assess its accuracy in evaluating hair loss severity compared to a human dermatologist. Participants took selfies of their heads, and the AI system used Savin’s grading to analyze hair loss. The AI's assessment matched the dermatologist's diagnosis in 28 out of 30 cases, achieving a 94% accuracy rate. The study found that 20% of participants underestimated their hair loss severity. The results suggest that the MDhair app is a valuable tool for accurately assessing androgenetic alopecia severity, highlighting the potential for AI in digital health applications.

Spironolactone can remain effective for a long time in treating androgenetic alopecia, but it may not completely stop hair loss. Hair loss treatments like spironolactone, finasteride, and dutasteride slow down hair loss rather than cure it, and their effectiveness can vary based on individual response and the aggressiveness of the condition.

A 35-year-old male uses topical minoxidil, spironolactone, and microneedling for hair loss, with spironolactone prescribed based on a DNA test indicating poor response to finasteride and dutasteride. Despite concerns about the test's validity and spironolactone's side effects, he reports stable or improved hair condition and no low testosterone symptoms.
