TLDR Scalp conditions change with age, affecting hair health.
This study analyzed age-related changes in scalp biophysical parameters among 200 participants, split evenly between individuals in their 20s and 50s. Key findings include decreased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and hydration, but increased sebum production in the older age group. Women in their 50s showed increased skin firmness, yellowness, and redness, with decreased sebum output and lower pH values, while men exhibited lower TEWL and increased yellowness. Hair density decreased with age in both sexes, and hair thickness decreased in women. The study highlights the complex nature of scalp aging and suggests the need for personalized scalp care strategies, despite limitations such as the focus on only two age groups and an imbalanced sex distribution.
