TLDR Hair restoration surgery is improving, with less painful techniques like FUE and robotic systems, but they can be costly and require training.
In the document from 2013, Dr. Chang-Hun Huh discussed the state of hair restoration surgery, which is used to transfer hair and tissue from the back of the scalp to areas where hair is desired. The surgery is particularly indicated for Androgenetic Alopecia to restore the hairline and can also increase hair density in other cases. Annually, over 800,000 patients worldwide undergo hair restoration. Traditional strip surgery, which involves removing a strip of scalp from the occiput, was the standard in Korea, but it leaves a linear scar and is painful. Over the past decade, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has improved, using small punches without leaving a linear scar and being less painful, but it is labor-intensive and has a learning curve for surgeons. To improve FUE, a robotic system (ARTASⓇ) was developed in 2011, which reduces surgeon fatigue and maintains a low transection rate, but comes with high installation and maintenance costs. Dr. Huh aimed to provide an overview of these techniques in his lecture.
