TLDR Old psychiatric drugs are increasingly being used for new purposes, and technologies like SmartCube® help create new drugs.
The study "Advancements in Drug Repurposing: Examples in Psychiatric Medications" analyzed FDA-approved psychiatric drugs from 2002 to 2022, finding an increasing trend in drug repurposing. The repurposing methods were categorized into six areas: new application exploration, reduction of side effects, symptom control improvement, medication compliance improvement, drug efficacy enhancement, and reduction of drug-drug interactions. The study found that 10 out of 30 drugs were repurposed, with recent methods focusing on fixed-dose combinations. The study also highlighted the development of SmartCube®, an AI system predicting human drug efficacy from animal phenotypes, which has led to the creation of novel drugs. The study concluded that well-designed drug repurposing and new technologies like SmartCube® could contribute to the development of new psychiatric drugs.
