Features of the Development of Acute Diffuse Telogen Effluvium in Patients with Post-COVID Syndrome
TLDR Treating post-COVID hair loss leads to full recovery, while not treating it often results in ongoing symptoms.
The study on 214 women (average age 59.5 years) with acute diffuse telogen effluvium (ADTE) post-COVID-19 found that hair loss began on average 6.7 weeks after COVID-19 onset. Of the participants, 147 received treatment, and 67 did not. After 6 months, 100% of the treated group fully recovered, while only 58.2% of the untreated group saw similar recovery, with 41.8% still showing symptoms of ADTE. Common symptoms included intense hair loss, scalp tenderness, and increased scalp oiliness. Laboratory findings often showed vitamin D deficiency and elevated D-dimer levels. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive treatment for post-COVID ADTE to improve quality of life and prevent chronic hair loss.
