Action Mechanism of Chamaecyparis obtusa Oil on Hair Growth

The study from 2013 demonstrated that Chamaecyparis obtusa oil (CO) has a significant effect on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice, comparable to 3% minoxidil (MXD). After 4 weeks, both CO and MXD treatments resulted in a significant increase in hair growth markers such as alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (y-GT) activities, as well as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expressions. Conversely, epidermal growth factor (EGF) expression was significantly reduced. The study also noted an increase in stem cell factor (SCF) expression within the hair follicle and epidermis. These findings suggest that CO may promote hair follicle cell proliferation, prolong the anagen phase of hair growth, and could be a potential hair growth promoter.
