TLDR Taking finasteride daily can effectively and safely increase hair density and thickness for women with hair loss.
In a study of 87 normoandrogenic Asian women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL), oral finasteride at a dose of 5 mg/day was found to be an effective and safe treatment. The women, aged between 21 and 69 years, were treated for 12 months, resulting in a significant increase in hair density to 107 ± 23/cm² and hair thickness to 70 ± 9 µm. The global photographic assessment score improved to 0.98 after treatment. Side effects were mild and occurred in only 4.6% of patients, including headache, menstrual irregularity, dizziness, and increased body hair growth. The study was not randomized and lacked a placebo control group, suggesting that future studies should include these aspects for more robust conclusions. However, the results indicate that finasteride could be a viable treatment option for FPHL in normoandrogenic women.
