TLDR Hair and beard transplants using the follicular unit extraction technique are effective, affordable, and minimally invasive treatments for scarring hair loss, with high success and satisfaction rates.
In a study conducted between 2015 and 2016, 27 patients suffering from scarring alopecia due to trauma, burns, and previous surgeries were treated using follicular unit transplantation. The study aimed to camouflage the scarring alopecia in the head and neck area. The donor areas were the occipital and post auricular scalp area for scalp, sideburn, and eyebrow scars, and the submental beard region for moustache and beard scars. The graft survival rate was 86%, and patient satisfaction was high, with 20 patients being very satisfied and 7 being good. The study concluded that follicular unit extraction technique (FUE) hair and beard transplantation is an effective, low-cost, minimally invasive treatment for scarring alopecia, with high success and satisfaction rates.
