TLDR Finasteride's negative effects on brain tissue in male rats may be reversible after stopping the drug.
The study investigated the effects of finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, on brain tissue in male rats. Eight rats were divided into three groups: control, finasteride, and finasteride withdrawal. After 4 weeks of finasteride administration, dihydrotestosterone levels and the dihydrotestosterone to testosterone ratio significantly decreased, but these levels improved after discontinuation of the drug. Brain tissue analysis showed reduced c-Fos protein activation due to finasteride, but this effect diminished after a month of stopping the drug. The study suggests that the negative impact of finasteride on brain tissue may be reversible.
