TLDR The 1927 nm Thulium laser effectively and safely treats postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones.
The study conducted in Saudi Arabia evaluated the efficacy and safety of a 1927 nm thulium laser for treating postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in 9 patients with Fitzpatrick skin type IV. The treatment involved one to four laser sessions followed by a depigmenting cream. Results indicated that the laser was effective, with 37.5% of patients showing an excellent response, 50% a satisfactory response, and 12.5% a nonsatisfactory response. Improvement was most notable after the first session. No paradoxical pigmentation was observed, suggesting the treatment was safe for darker skin types. The study highlighted the importance of using topical hydroquinone and selecting patients with epidermal lesions for positive outcomes.
