TLDR The 1927 nm Thulium laser effectively and safely treats postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones.
The study investigated the efficacy and safety of a nonablative 1927 nm wavelength laser followed by bleaching creams in treating postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in patients with Fitzpatrick skin type IV. Conducted in 2019, the prospective interventional pilot study involved nine patients, with eight completing the follow-up. Patients received one to four laser sessions, followed by topical hydroquinone 4% cream for 6 weeks. Results showed that 37.5% of patients had an excellent response, 50% had a satisfactory response, and 12.5% had a nonsatisfactory response. Side effects included edema and erythema, which resolved within 5 to 7 days. The treatment was deemed safe and effective, with no cases of paradoxical pigmentation observed.
