Published reviews give a fuller picture. A 2026 review of 117 studies found that pain, infection, folliculitis and swelling were the most common adverse events, with minor infection in about 1.4-2.0% and folliculitis in 1.1-12.1% of patients in the studies that reported rates. The review cautions that studies defined and reported complications so differently that these rates are rough, and that true incidence is not well established. Skin necrosis was rare, and reported serious complications included arteriovenous fistula, necrosis and graft failure (Sturm et al., 2026, PMID 42594307). Another review also lists shock loss (temporary shedding of existing hair), persistent redness, cysts, raised scarring and depletion of the donor area from over-harvesting (Romera de Blas et al., 2026, PMID 41709896).
