Can aloe vera gel help with sudden bald spots?

When Hair Disappears Without Warning: What's Going On?

Noticing sudden bald spots can be alarming. These random patches where hair thins or disappears entirely are often a sign that the scalp is reacting to stress, inflammation, or an underlying imbalance. One of the lesser-known but increasingly explored remedies for these cases is aloe vera gel. While commonly associated with soothing sunburns, some people now use it on the scalp, hoping to soothe it or help hair regrow. But is there real science behind this, or is it just another home remedy myth? Let's explore what researchers have found.

    What Are Bald Spots, Exactly?

Bald spots, known medically as focal alopecia, refer to areas where hair is missing in distinct patches rather than thinning uniformly. They can vary in size, from tiny circles to larger irregular shapes, and may appear suddenly or develop gradually over weeks. These spots are often smooth and can sometimes show signs of redness or irritation. There are several causes behind this phenomenon. In many cases, it is linked to alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair to fall out. Other factors like physical trauma to the scalp, fungal infections, high emotional stress, or nutritional deficiencies can also trigger localized hair loss.

    What Are Bald Spots, Exactly

Importantly, bald spots are different from general hair thinning.

Thinning usually occurs evenly across the scalp over time, whereas bald spots are concentrated in specific areas. Because bald spots often signal an underlying issue rather than just cosmetic concern, getting a diagnosis promptly matters. Aloe gel is a cosmetic moisturiser. It has not been tested as a treatment for alopecia areata or other patchy hair loss. Sudden bald patches need a doctor or dermatologist to find the cause, because some causes (such as fungal infection) need prescription treatment.

Aloe Vera: More Than Just a Skin Soother

Aloe vera is a succulent plant known for its thick, gel-filled leaves. The gel contains a cocktail of vitamins (like A, C, and E), enzymes, amino acids, and minerals such as zinc and magnesium. All of these components contribute to skin repair and hydration, but their role on the scalp and hair follicles is the focus of growing scientific curiosity.

A healthy scalp is critical for strong, resilient hair. Irritations, inflammations, and microbial imbalances can damage hair follicles, leading to shedding and even bald spots. Lab and skin studies describe anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and moisturising properties in aloe (Surjushe et al., 2008). These have not been shown to help hair grow back.

How Aloe Vera Gel May Calm an Angry Scalp

A 2008 review of aloe's skin uses describes lab findings that aloe reduces prostaglandin E2, a molecule involved in inflammation (Surjushe et al., 2008). These are lab and skin findings. They have not been shown on the scalp. Aloe has not been tested in alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune condition.

Another important factor is aloe vera's pH-balancing ability. The scalp’s natural pH is slightly acidic, between 4.5 and 5.5. Skin pH plays a role in the skin's protective barrier (Ali & Yosipovitch, 2013). Whether aloe gel changes scalp pH in a useful way has not been studied.

    User Experiences

Many community members have shared their experiences using aloe vera for hair loss and scalp health, particularly when dealing with random bald spots or stress-induced shedding. One popular theme among users is combining microneedling with aloe vera. In one post, a user discussed that microneedling plus aloe vera application might help stimulate dormant stem cells, potentially aiding in hair regrowth. They also suggested using minoxidil alongside for better outcomes (Microneedling and aloe vera to recruit stem cells).

Another user asked about applying aloe vera after home microneedling (Microneedle and aloe vera after?). Home microneedling can cause skin irritation and infection, and putting products on freshly needled skin may raise the chance of a reaction.

A notable six-month progress update was shared by a user who used microneedling along with a homemade shampoo made from aloe vera and rosemary water. They reported visible hair improvements, showing photos that indicated thicker and healthier hair (Microneedling + homemade shampoo (aloe vera mixed with rosemary water) 6 months update).

Similarly, another user posted their experience with a homemade shampoo containing rosemary water, aloe vera, and vitamin E. They reported noticeably denser hair and a healthier scalp after six months of using it with a dermaroller (Dermaroller + homemade shampoo (rosemary water + aloe vera + vitamin E).

In another case, a user started topical finasteride 0.1% combined with aloe vera 0.05%. They began documenting their journey with plans to update every three months. The user chose aloe vera for its soothing properties to counteract potential scalp irritation from finasteride (Started Fin Topical 0.1% treatment 19th May 2023). There is no FDA-approved topical finasteride in the US, and the FDA has received reports of lasting side effects with compounded versions (FDA, 2025).

There was also a discussion where users debated using natural hair masks — including aloe vera — while on finasteride. Some participants shared that combining aloe vera, red hot pepper, onion juice, and mint oil seemed to help with scalp health and maintaining density during finasteride treatment (Did anyone try natural hair masks while on Finasteride?).

In a product-related discussion, aloe vera was listed as a key ingredient in a hemp-based inflammation cream intended for scalp application. The poster believed the aloe vera content could help reduce scalp inflammation, which is often linked with hair loss (Is this hemp inflammation cream good for hair loss).

Lastly, a 22-year-old woman experiencing genetic hair loss shared that she tried natural remedies like coconut oil and aloe vera with little success before seeking professional advice. She considered moving on to medical treatments like minoxidil after learning that natural methods alone were insufficient (Do I need to get professional advice?).

Overall, community feedback suggests aloe vera is frequently used post-microneedling to soothe the scalp, as a supportive ingredient in DIY shampoos, or alongside medical treatments in the hope of improving scalp health. These are personal reports, and because most users combined aloe with microneedling or medication, they cannot show whether aloe itself helped. However, users typically combine it with more established treatments like minoxidil or finasteride.

What does the science say about aloe and hair regrowth?

We found no published human trial of aloe vera gel for hair regrowth, and no verified animal study.

A 2008 review reports lab findings that glucomannan (a sugar-based polysaccharide) in aloe can stimulate collagen production in skin (Surjushe et al., 2008). This has not been shown on the scalp or in hair follicles. Direct studies in humans are lacking.

Before You Smother Your Scalp: Things to Keep in Mind

Aloe gel on the skin is widely used, but it can cause allergic contact dermatitis in some people (Guo & Mei, 2016). Stop if it itches, burns or causes a rash. It is advisable to perform a patch test by applying a small amount on the inner arm and waiting 24 hours before broader application.

Also, not all aloe vera products are created equal. Commercial gels often contain preservatives, alcohols, and synthetic fragrances that could irritate the scalp rather than soothe it. If you use a fresh leaf, drain the yellow sap (latex) first; it can irritate skin (Guo & Mei, 2016). Patch-test first.

Finally, aloe vera is not a treatment for bald spots. Underlying causes such as autoimmune diseases, hormonal imbalances, or nutritional deficiencies must be addressed with the help of a healthcare provider.

    Research Overview

We found no clinical study of aloe vera for hair loss. The two reviews below are about skin, not hair.

A review article published in 2008 by Surjushe, Vasani, and Saple provided an overview of aloe vera’s dermatological applications. The study compiled data from various in vitro (lab-based) and human studies, summarizing aloe’s benefits for skin healing and hydration. It did not study the scalp or hair regrowth, and it reports no clinical trials of aloe for hair loss.

A 2013 review by Ali and Yosipovitch explained how skin pH affects the skin barrier. It did not study aloe vera or hair. We found no study showing that aloe's acidity helps scalp pH or hair follicles.
