Comparative Effects of Zinc Methionylglycinate and Zinc Sulfate on Hair Coat Characteristics and Zinc Concentration in Plasma, Hair, and Feces of Dogs
January 2007
TLDR Zinc methionylglycinate at 160 ppm improves dog hair and zinc levels best.
The study compared the effects of zinc methionylglycinate (ZnMG) and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) on hair coat characteristics and zinc concentration in plasma, hair, and feces of dogs. In the first experiment, 8 mature female beagles were divided into two groups to test the effects of 120 ppm zinc supplementation. Results showed that ZnMG led to greater hair growth, higher zinc deposition in hair, increased plasma zinc concentration, and better hair condition compared to ZnSO4. In the second experiment, 9 beagles were divided into three groups to test ZnMG at 80, 120, and 160 ppm. The 160 ppm supplementation resulted in the best outcomes for hair growth, zinc absorption, and hair condition. The study concluded that ZnMG at 160 ppm was the most effective for improving hair coat characteristics in dogs.
