TLDR Zinc deficiency in alcoholic cirrhosis patients causes skin issues and other symptoms, which improve with zinc treatment.
The study investigated 33 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (AC) for cutaneous manifestations of zinc deficiency, dividing them into three groups based on their skin conditions and response to zinc treatment. Group C, consisting of 9 patients, showed skin lesions that were cured by oral zinc replacement therapy alone. The study found that plasma zinc concentrations were significantly lower in AC patients, especially those with skin manifestations, compared to controls. Symptoms such as eczema, cheilitis, glossitis, stomatitis, alopecia, and behavioral disorders were observed, with rapid symptom regression under zinc sulfate treatment confirming the diagnosis. The study highlighted the importance of zinc in managing skin conditions associated with AC.
