X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Hair as a Method of Diagnosis of Diffuse Alopecia

    V. V. Skadorva
TLDR Trace element deficiencies may contribute to diffuse alopecia.
The study utilized X-ray fluorescence analysis to examine the trace element composition of hair in individuals over 18 years old suffering from diffuse alopecia (ALD). It was discovered that women with ALD exhibited deficiencies in trace elements such as sulfur, iron, potassium, chromium, selenium, and manganese. In contrast, men with ALD showed deficiencies in calcium, sulfur, and zinc. These findings suggested that trace element deficiencies might play a role in the development of diffuse alopecia.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
