TLDR Dermatologists are the main innovators in noninvasive cosmetic procedures, with other specialties also contributing significantly.
The document from 2016 critically analyzed the contributions of medical specialties to noninvasive and minimally invasive cosmetic and surgical procedures, using citation scores from the Thomson Reuters Web of Science Database. Dermatology was found to be the leading specialty in the development of various treatments such as botulinum toxin for rhytides, injectable fillers, laser treatments, chemical peels, and noninvasive body contouring. Plastic surgery made the greatest contributions to hair transplantation and liposuction, with citation scores of 500.33 and 2,078 respectively. Neurology led in botulinum toxin treatments for hyperhidrosis, and vascular surgery in sclerotherapy. The study emphasized the pioneering role of dermatologists in these procedures and the importance of recognizing their expertise for patient safety and outcomes, while also acknowledging the contributions of other specialties.
