TLDR White hair in alopecia areata may be linked to reduced Sox10 expression.
The study investigated white hair follicles in alopecia areata (AA) patches, focusing on their melanocytic components. Conducted at Minia University Hospitals, biopsies were taken from AA patients, with group 1 having white hair follicles and group 2 without. The biopsies were stained for melanocytic markers Sox 10, CD117, Melan A, and HMB-45. Results showed that while most melanocytic markers were expressed in both groups, there was a significant decline in the expression of the Sox10 marker in the white hair group. This suggests a potential link between reduced Sox10 expression and the presence of white hair follicles in AA.
