TLDR Vitiligo is a systemic disease with psychological effects, and new treatments focus on personalized care.
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting 0.5-2% of the global population, characterized by the destruction of melanocytes and resulting in depigmented skin patches. Recent research has identified oxidative stress, genetic predisposition, and immune mechanisms, particularly the IFN-γ-chemokine axis, as key factors in its pathogenesis. Advances in diagnostic techniques and treatments, including Janus Kinase inhibitors like ruxolitinib, provide promising alternatives to traditional therapies. Effective management now emphasizes a holistic approach that addresses both medical and psychological aspects to enhance patient outcomes.
