TLDR Reliable, non-invasive tools are needed for better vitiligo diagnosis.
This systematic review evaluates non-invasive diagnostic methods for vitiligo, analyzing 64 studies on eight imaging techniques and three biophysical approaches. It highlights the effectiveness of methods like reflectance confocal microscopy, dermoscopy, and ultraviolet light photography with Wood's lamp for diagnosing and monitoring vitiligo. These techniques offer advantages such as avoiding skin irritation, enabling longitudinal tracking, and providing detailed images of skin microstructures. The review also notes the potential of computer-assisted imaging analysis and machine learning in remote diagnosis and telemedicine. Despite limitations like cost and accessibility, these methods show promise in improving vitiligo assessment and management, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols to enhance reliability.
