1,25 (OH) 2D and calcium were found to promote differentiation and inhibit proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes, which supported their clinical use in treating psoriasis. Despite this, the specific mechanisms by which vitamin D acted on keratinocytes were not well understood. The review highlighted that while calcium and vitamin D receptor signaling pathways had overlapping roles in keratinocyte differentiation, their effects on hair follicles were distinct.
