A Study for Verification of Hair Growth Effect of Azelaic Acid and Vitamin B6
January 2008
TLDR Azelaic acid and vitamin B6 together may improve hair growth.
This study investigated the hair growth effects of azelaic acid and vitamin B6 using six-week-old C57BL/6 mice. The mice were divided into five groups: saline (negative control), propylene glycol (vehicle control), azelaic acid, vitamin B6, and a combination of azelaic acid and vitamin B6. After 2 weeks of topical treatment, the combination of azelaic acid and vitamin B6 significantly accelerated hair regrowth, promoted hair follicle elongation and thickness, and increased the number of basal cells. Additionally, this combination treatment increased the expression of IGF-I and decreased the expression of TGF-β1 in the skin. The results suggested that azelaic acid and vitamin B6 together have an additive effect and could be used as hair growth materials.
