TLDR Alopecia areata patients have a higher risk of blood clots.
A retrospective case-control study using the All of Us database investigated the association between alopecia areata (AA) and venous thromboembolism (VTE). The study included 926 AA patients matched with 3704 controls based on sex, race, ethnicity, and age. Results showed a significantly higher incidence of VTE in AA patients (1.8%) compared to controls (0.4%), with a p-value of less than 0.001. Multivariable regression analysis indicated that AA patients had increased odds of 4.93 for developing VTE. The study suggests a potential link between AA and VTE, highlighting the need for further research into this association and its underlying mechanisms.
