TLDR Alopecia areata patients have a higher risk of blood clots.
This study investigated the association between venous thromboembolism (VTE) and alopecia areata (AA) using a retrospective case-control design with 926 AA patients and 3704 matched controls. The results showed a significantly higher incidence of VTE in AA patients (1.8%) compared to controls (0.4%), with a multivariable regression indicating increased odds of 4.93 for VTE in AA patients. These findings suggest a potential link between AA and VTE, warranting further investigation into the underlying pathophysiology.
