TLDR Urban pollution and sun exposure speed up skin aging and wrinkle formation in Chinese women, with pollution's effects becoming significant after age 45.
The study "Impact of urban pollution on top of chronic sun-exposure on skin ageing in Chinese women" involved 301 women aged 20-80 years and 202 women aged 20-45 years from different urban environments in China. The research found that urban pollution significantly accelerates the onset of facial wrinkles and increases pigmentation severity after 30 years of age (p<0.001). UV-exposure significantly impacts facial wrinkles and pigmentation from 20 years of age (p<0.001). The impact of pollution increases with each 5-year cluster after 30 years (p<0.01), remaining lower than that of UV until 40 years (p<0.01). At 45 years, no significant differences in the increased wrinkle rate and severity of pigmentation were observed, however, with a higher value for pollution. The study concludes that while chronic sun-exposure impacts skin ageing from 20 years, pollution becomes a significant factor after 45 years.
