TLDR Women with PCOS have different levels of certain metabolites in their blood, which could help diagnose and predict the condition.
In 2021, a study was conducted to investigate the difference in serum metabolic profiles between 31 patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and 31 healthy female controls. The metabolomics analysis revealed that 68 metabolites were downregulated and 78 were upregulated in the serum of PCOS patients compared to the controls. These metabolites were mainly associated with Triacylglycerols, Glycerophosphocholines, Acylcarnitines, Diacylglycerols, Peptides, Amino acids, Glycerophosphoethanolamines, and fatty acids. Pathway analysis showed that these metabolites were enriched in pathways including Glycerophospholipid metabolism, Fatty acid degradation, Fatty acid biosynthesis, and Ether lipid metabolism. The study concluded that these metabolic and pathway profile differences could potentially serve as markers for the prognosis and diagnosis of PCOS.

A 30-year-old female with PCOS and male pattern baldness is frustrated with her endocrinologist's recommendation of only Spironolactone and minoxidil, feeling that dutasteride, finasteride, and progesterone would be more effective. Other users suggest various online sources for treatments, warn against self-medicating due to potential risks, and recommend seeking a specialized endocrinologist or considering additional treatments like Inositol, Berberine, and dermaneedling.
