TLDR Ultrasound is a useful, safe, and affordable tool for diagnosing and managing skin nodules.
The document reviews the use of ultrasound for visualizing subcutaneous nodules in dermatology. A total of 57 articles were included in the review, which were written in English and involved the use of ultrasound for the subcutaneous nodules of human patients. The sonographic features of the subcutaneous nodules in sarcoidosis, granuloma annulare, or panniculitis were characterized. The study found that ultrasound is a non-invasive and cost-effective technique to capture images in real-time without ionizing radiation. It can assist in dermatological diagnoses, direct biopsies, facilitate appropriate treatment, and monitor disease progression. However, more research is needed to understand the full potential of ultrasound for a larger variety of dermatologic concerns.
