TLDR Two trichoscopic patterns found in hair loss: diffuse fibrotic and androgenetic alopecia, affecting treatment choice and regrowth chances.
The study analyzed the trichoscopic patterns of mid-frontal scalp hair loss in patients diagnosed with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) and found two different patterns: the diffuse fibrotic pattern and the androgenetic alopecia pattern. The diffuse fibrotic pattern was more common and may be considered an effect of minimal fibrosis that mainly involves miniaturized hairs and results in loss of follicular units and vellus hairs. The androgenetic alopecia pattern was characterized by vellus hairs, hair shaft thickness diversity, yellow dots, an increased percentage of follicular units with one hair, and a decreased percentage of follicular units with three hairs. These two different trichoscopic patterns may affect the choice of therapy and prognosis for hair regrowth.
