TLDR Topical vitamin D is effective in treating vitiligo with few side effects.
Vitamin D is implicated in melanogenesis and has therapeutic applications in dermatology, particularly for conditions like vitiligo, which is characterized by skin depigmentation due to melanocyte destruction by T cells. Topical vitamin D, with minimal side effects, is used in vitiligo treatment and comes in various forms such as calcipotriol, calcitriol, tacalcitol, maxacalcitol, and hexafluoro-1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3. These can be used as monotherapy or in combination with topical corticosteroids. The literature review discussed the effectiveness of topical vitamin D in vitiligo treatment, highlighting its role in melanogenesis and as an immunomodulator.
