TLDR Thyroid hormone receptor β1 is found in human hair follicles and helps them survive.
Researchers investigated the expression of thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) in human hair follicles and found that TRβ1 was the predominant form. Immunoreactive TRs were present in both dermal and epithelial compartments of the pilosebaceous unit. Additionally, they studied the effects of 3,3', 5-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) on hair follicle survival in vitro and discovered that physiological levels of free T3 significantly enhanced hair follicle survival.
