TLDR An 11-year-old girl's hair regrew after treating her thyroid condition with carbimazole.
An 11-year-old girl with patchy scalp hair loss was diagnosed with alopecia areata and autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease). She exhibited symptoms such as weight loss, palpitations, and increased bowel frequency. Her thyroid profile indicated hyperthyroidism, with elevated thyrotropin receptor and thyroid peroxidase antibodies. Treated with carbimazole, an antithyroid medication with immunosuppressive effects, she showed significant improvement in hair regrowth after six months, without the use of topical agents. This case highlights the association between alopecia areata and autoimmune disorders, emphasizing the need for vigilant follow-up in such conditions.
