TLDR Low vitamin D levels can lead to increased parathyroid hormone levels.
The study investigated the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in 2,226 patients. It was found that 22.3% of the patients had elevated PTH levels, with 92% of these cases attributed to secondary hyperparathyroidism. The average vitamin D level among the patients was 16.4 ng/mL, and 64% of the patients had vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL, indicating a deficiency. This suggested that low vitamin D levels were associated with increased PTH levels, highlighting the role of vitamin D deficiency in secondary hyperparathyroidism.
