Testosterone: The Forgotten Female Hormone

    Kristen A. Horner
TLDR Testosterone is important for women's health, but more research is needed to guide its use.
The article reviews the use of testosterone as a replacement hormone for women in peri- and early postmenopause, highlighting its significant effects on the female body. Despite its use for over 80 years, there is a lack of consensus on its indications beyond treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder in postmenopausal women. The absence of FDA-approved formulations for women in the U.S. leads to the use of compounded medications and male-oriented doses. The review emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to understand testosterone's role in women's health and calls for more randomized controlled trials to establish clearer guidelines for its use.
