Diabetes And Pain: Therapeutic Effect Of Testosterone Metabolites

TLDR Testosterone metabolites may help relieve diabetic nerve pain.
The study investigated the effects of testosterone metabolites, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (3α-diol), on diabetic neuropathic pain in rats. Diabetic neuropathy, affecting about 50% of diabetic individuals, is challenging to manage. The research found that diabetes significantly decreased DHT levels in the spinal cord, which were restored by DHT or 3α-diol treatments. Both metabolites exhibited analgesic properties, with DHT affecting mechanical nociceptive thresholds and various molecular markers, while 3α-diol influenced tactile allodynia thresholds and other inflammatory markers. These findings suggested that testosterone metabolites could be potential treatments for diabetic neuropathic pain.
