TLDR Different types of hair loss within Telogen Effluvium are caused by various disruptions in hair growth cycles.
In 2012, Headington proposed five functional subtypes of Telogen Effluvium (TE), a type of hair loss, which were distinguishable by different disruptions in hair follicle cycling that led to increased shedding of telogen club hairs. These subtypes were thought to explain the various triggers and slight differences in presentation and symptom duration experienced by patients with TE.
