TLDR Many Egyptian women who were hospitalized for COVID-19 experienced significant hair loss afterwards.
The study "Prevalence of Telogen Effluvium in Egyptian Women with Post-Covid 19 Viral Infection" investigated 500 female patients who had COVID-19 infections weeks to months prior. The study found a significant correlation between hospitalization for COVID-19 and telogen effluvium (acute hair loss) (P = 0.001). Early symptoms of post-COVID-19 acute telogen effluvium included lower hair density, empty hair follicles, and/or short regrowing hair. The study concluded that while COVID-19 is not the only cause of acute telogen effluvium, it should be considered when assessing patients presenting with hair loss and a history of COVID-19 infection. The study also noted that while acute telogen effluvium often doesn't last long, it can significantly impact a person's mental health, especially if they've previously been incapacitated by COVID-19.
