TLDR Telogen effluvium is a common, temporary hair loss condition often affecting young women.
Telogen effluvium (TE) is a non-scarring, diffuse hair loss condition that typically occurs around 3 months after a triggering event and lasts for about 6 months. It is the most common cause of diffuse hair loss in young females, but can affect both sexes, with a higher frequency in adult females. TE can be acute or chronic, with chronic TE characterized by increased hair shedding lasting for more than six months, often affecting middle-aged women. The cause of chronic TE frequently remains unexplained as patients do not recall the triggering event. The condition can result from five different pathogenetic mechanisms, as per Headington's classification.
