TLDR Patients with deficiency syndrome, especially qi deficiency, have a higher risk of type 2 heart attacks.
The study examined the correlation between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes and type 2 myocardial infarction (T2MI) in 244 critically ill patients with pulmonary diseases. It found that patients with deficiency syndrome, particularly qi deficiency syndrome, had a significantly higher risk of T2MI. T2MI patients exhibited higher levels of procalcitonin and troponin, lower estimated glomerular filtration rates, longer hospital stays, and higher ICU mortality rates. The study identified independent risk factors for T2MI, including baseline troponin levels, hemoglobin levels below 55 g/L, mechanical ventilation, and TCM syndrome of deficiency. The findings suggested that TCM syndrome differentiation could be associated with the risk factors of T2MI, although the study was limited by its small sample size and retrospective design.
