TLDR Supercritical CO2 extraction makes rice bran oil healthier and safer than traditional methods.
The 2017 document reviews the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) extraction of rice bran oil (RBO), emphasizing its advantages over traditional hexane extraction methods. SC-CO₂ extraction preserves RBO's nutrients, phytochemicals, and antioxidants, and yields oil with higher concentrations of beneficial compounds like γ-oryzanols, tocopherols, and tocotrienols. The technology allows for selective compound extraction and can deacidify RBO up to 97.8%. The extraction parameters, such as pressure and temperature, can be optimized using methods like response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD). The document also notes that SC-CO₂ extraction produces RBO with comparable oil yield, better stability, and safety for consumption. Additionally, SC-CO₂ extracted RBO has potential health benefits, including acting as a dietary antioxidant and showing promise in treating androgenic alopecia. Despite challenges like the need for high pressures and complex phase equilibrium, SC-CO₂ extraction is presented as a green and effective method for producing high-quality RBO.
