TLDR Finasteride, a hair loss drug, is linked to increased suicidal thoughts, particularly when used for hair loss.
The document reports on a study examining the association between finasteride, a drug used for hair loss treatment, and suicidal behaviors (SB) such as suicidal ideation (SI), suicide attempts (SA), and completed suicide (CS). The study analyzed data from the U.S. FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database from January 2004 to March 2017, which included 9,215,422 individual safety reports (ISRs). The study found that out of 51,991 finasteride ISRs, where hair loss was indicated, there were 341 reports of SI, 50 of SA, and 49 of CS. The reporting odds ratios (RORs) indicated a significant association between finasteride and SI, especially when used for hair loss (ROR 5.1858, P<.0001). While there was a significantly lower risk of CS for all finasteride ISRs, the risk of CS was significantly higher when finasteride was used specifically for hair loss (ROR 7.9204, P=.0406). The study concluded that finasteride was positively associated with SI, and the association with SB was more pronounced when the drug was used for hair loss. The study suggests a need for further investigation into the risks associated with finasteride use for hair loss treatment.
