TLDR Finasteride use for hair loss is linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and a higher risk of suicide.
The document reports on a study examining suicidal behaviors (SB) such as suicidal ideation (SI), suicide attempts (SA), and completed suicide (CS) in patients treated with finasteride for hair loss, using data from the U.S. FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. The study analyzed reports from January 2004 to March 2017, which included 9,215,422 individual safety reports (ISRs). It found that hair loss was indicated in 86.78% of all finasteride ISRs, with an average age of 33.97 years among those reported, and a predominance of male patients (70.34%). The study found 341 reports of SI, 50 of SA, and 49 of CS with finasteride as the primary suspect. The reporting odds ratios (RORs) indicated a significant association between finasteride and SI, especially when used for hair loss (ROR 5.1858, P<.0001). While there was a significantly lower risk of CS for all finasteride ISRs, the risk of CS was significantly higher when finasteride was used specifically for hair loss (ROR 7.9204, P=.0406). The study concluded that finasteride is positively associated with SI and that the risk of CS increases when the drug is used for hair loss. No commercial support was identified for this study.
