TLDR The new stiffness test works well for gels but not for sprays.
The study developed and validated a new two-point bending stiffness method to assess the performance of hair styling gels and sprays on flat hair strands. Various commercially available thickeners and styling polymers were tested. The new method showed a strong correlation with sensory assessments for styling gels but not for hair sprays. The discrepancy was attributed to differences in polymer/hair composites and the alignment of hair fibers in the test. This alignment was crucial for reproducible results.
